These instruments (also called Rauschpfeifen) were developed on the basis of my shawms.
Despite their windcap, they can be overblown to the twelfth.
The sound, especially of the smaller instruments, is very loud and screaming (hence the name).
They are ideal outdoor instruments and combine well with bagpipes and percussion, for folk music and music of the middle ages.
